How to Use a Microphone Properly

Tips and techniques to avoid sounding distorted or muffled when you sing. Learning to use a microphone correctly will also help you sound better too.

  • If using a microphone stand make sure it is at a comfortable height for you to sing into before starting, playing with it while singing will be distracting to you and your guests.
  • Be sure you are not standing on a loose cable.
  • Check the on/off switch location and be sure not to handle the switch while singing, you don’t want to turn it off.
  • Hold the microphone by the handle only, don’t cover the pickup with your hand or fingers and keep the microphone at a distance of ½” to 1” away from your mouth or you may cause a muffled or distorted sound.
  • If you have a particularly quiet singing voice, ask your KJ or host to turn your microphone volume up for you.
  • Don’t ever shout! The microphone is sensitive device. If you have a loud voice you can adjust the microphone volume accordingly.
  • Avoid pointing the microphone Santabarbarakaraoke.com is Best Karaoke Rentals in Santa Barbaratowards speakers at all times or feedback may occur, a horrible high pitched sound no one wants to experience.
  • To avoid popping sound when singing, words containing ‘B’, ‘P’ or ‘S’, by holding the microphone slightly to the side instead of directly to the front of your mouth.
  • Sing normally, don’t shout, the microphone is sensitive enough to pick up your voice and can be adjusted to provide more actuation.
  • When singing a long powerful note move the microphone away from your mouth during the loud notes and gradually bring it back towards you as you start to run out of breath and your “music volume” will then be decreased, this procedure will make your overall singing volume level be more consistent.
  • Don’t swing or drop the microphone, tug, pull the cable or move further than the microphone cables length or you may cause damage to the equipment and additional damages.
